StudyGPA for parents
Nightsesh is now StudyGPA. Same app, same company (Sparks Strategies LLC). This page still uses the old name in places while we update it; everything on it applies to StudyGPA.
Nightsesh is an AI flashcard maker and study app built on each student's own class material. Your teen snaps their notes, adds slides or records a class, and Nightsesh turns their own class into flash cards, quizzes, organized notes and an AI tutor they can type or talk to. It's made for high-school and college students, and anyone 13 and up who studies. It's on iPhone and iPad now; Mac is coming soon. This page is for parents and guardians of students under 18.
In short
- Studying flash cards is always free. Your teen can review the cards they've made any time, on any plan.
- Less than a tutor. A whole month of Nightsesh Plus costs less than one hour with a tutor, and it's there at 11 p.m. the night before the test.
- The class audio stays on the device. A recorded class is turned into text on your teen's iPhone or iPad. The audio isn't uploaded.
- Homework help that checks their work, with an optional Hints first mode you can lock with a passcode.
- No ads. No trackers. Never sold.
What it does
Your teen adds their notes, photos of the whiteboard, slides, a chapter or the teacher's study guide, records a class, or just types what's on the test. Nightsesh turns it into:
- Flash cards and quizzes written from their own material and checked against it. Cards they miss come back sooner (spaced repetition), so they keep reviewing what they're shaky on.
- Organized class notes from a recorded class: the big ideas, definitions, what the teacher stressed, and questions to check themselves.
- An AI tutor to study with, by typing or talking out loud, or by listening on a walk (Walk & study). It knows all of their classes, points to the exact slide, page or moment in class, and explains things another way when they're stuck.
- Exam dates and readiness, so your teen can see how prepared they are for each test.
Nightsesh's tutor is AI, not a person, and never a companion. It can make mistakes, so every answer shows where it came from in your teen's own material.
How the AI tutor helps with homework
- It checks first. When your teen shows their work, the AI tutor says whether it's right, and where it went wrong if not.
- It gives the answer when asked. If your teen clearly asks for the answer, the AI tutor gives it, with the reasoning. On practice cards, it waits for a real try first.
- It helps with writing, but doesn't write it for them. Outlines, ideas, feedback and editing your teen's own writing are all fair game. It won't write a finished assignment for them to hand in.
- Hints first, if you'd like. In Settings › AI tutor, you can turn on Hints first. The AI tutor then starts with hints and questions before giving an answer. You can lock it with a 4-digit passcode so it stays on.
- It's set on each device, so set it on every device your teen uses.
- The passcode is saved only on that device. We never see it, so we can't reset it. Deleting and reinstalling Nightsesh turns Hints first off.
- There's no parent account. Hints first doesn't show you your teen's conversations, and it doesn't send you anything.
Schools have different rules about AI. Please talk with your teen about what their teachers allow.
Safety
- Teen safety rules on every AI request. Every request Nightsesh's AI handles, typed or spoken, comes with rules we wrote for teens. The AI keeps things classroom-appropriate, refuses harmful instructions, doesn't ask for personal details, and says it's an AI, not a person.
- Crisis support on screen. If something your teen types or says suggests they may be in danger or thinking about self-harm, Nightsesh shows a support card right away: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911 in an emergency. This check runs on the device. It doesn't notify anyone, including parents, the school or emergency services, and it never blocks studying.
- 13 and up only. Everyone confirms they're at least 13 before signing in. We don't knowingly allow accounts for children under 13.
- No sharing with other students. Your teen can't share their material, cards or conversations with classmates, and nobody can message them in Nightsesh.
- No ads. Ever. Nightsesh shows no ads and has no advertising or tracking code from other companies.
- We never sell your teen's data, and we don't share it for advertising.
- Report anything. Every AI reply and every card can be reported from the app. For anything urgent, email support@nightsesh.com with "Urgent" in the subject line.
Privacy: who sees what
| What | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your teen's Topics and Folders, study material, notes, cards, conversations with the AI tutor and progress | Our service (Sparks Strategies LLC), stored with Supabase (database, files and sign-in) and run on Fly.io servers in Virginia, U.S. | So it syncs across your teen's devices |
| What your teen sends for help: questions (typed, or the words of harder questions asked out loud), notes, transcripts, photos of their work | Anthropic (the company that makes the Claude AI) | To write replies, notes and practice, and to work out harder questions during live voice. Anthropic doesn't train its AI on this data and deletes it within 30 days, unless its safety systems flag a request. |
| Live voice (only while it's on), including any photo your teen chooses to show the AI tutor, and the text of Walk & study sessions | OpenAI | To listen, speak and read Walk & study aloud. OpenAI doesn't train on it by default and keeps safety logs for up to 30 days. |
| Voice conversations | Saved as words (a transcript) in your teen's conversation. We never save the audio. | So your teen can scroll back |
| Class recordings, board photos and scanned pages | Turned into text on your teen's iPhone, iPad or Mac. Class audio is never uploaded. Saved notes, with their photos and pages, sync privately to your teen's account when they're signed in. | Free and private |
| Payments and sign-in | Apple (App Store and Sign in with Apple). We never see card details. | Billing and a secure sign-in |
- Nightsesh asks your teen before sending anything to an AI for the first time, and asks again whenever we add an AI provider or change what we send. They can turn AI study help off in Settings › AI & privacy and keep studying the cards and notes they already have.
- Deleting data: in the app, go to Settings › Account › Delete account. This permanently removes your teen's study account from our servers: synced Topics, Folders, material and files, notes, cards, conversations, progress, feedback and balances. Apple keeps its own purchase records. Copies on the device stay until they're deleted or the app is removed. Single conversations can be deleted too: in the AI tutor's History, swipe one and tap Delete.
- Parents can ask us directly. If your teen is under 18, email support@nightsesh.com to ask what we have about them, get a copy, or have it deleted. We'll take reasonable steps to confirm the request is genuine. Students 18 and older make these requests themselves.
- The full details are in our Privacy Policy.
How it fits your teen's classes
Nightsesh works with what your teen's teacher actually teaches, not a generic textbook. Every card and every answer points back to your teen's own notes, slides or recording (for example, "your Bio notes, Slide 12" or "Audio 34:00–34:30").
Before the first recording, Nightsesh asks your teen to confirm they have permission to record. Please remind them to follow the teacher's and school's rules on recording.
What it costs, compared with a tutor
A private tutor usually costs $25–80 an hour (Tutors.com, Private Prep). Nightsesh is available any time, day or night, and it knows your teen's notes. It isn't a replacement for a great teacher or tutor. It's help for all the hours in between.
- Free to start. Your teen's first couple of classes turned into notes and study cards, and a 10-minute taste of talking with the AI tutor, are on us. Free holds five Topics at a time. Studying flash cards and study cards is always free.
- One plan for more. Nightsesh Plus has room for every Topic they need, about 30 classes a month turned into notes and study cards, and 5 hours a month of talking with the AI tutor. A whole month of it costs less than one hour with a tutor, and there's nothing extra to buy inside the app.
- Prices. Nightsesh Plus is $149.99 a year (that's $12.50 a month) or $19.99 a month, in U.S. dollars, and both start with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. It renews automatically until it's canceled; cancel at least 24 hours before a free trial ends and you won't be charged. The price shown in the App Store before you subscribe is the one you pay.
- If your teen runs out: studying their cards keeps working, and on Nightsesh Plus the rest refills with the next plan month. There's nothing to buy in between.
Paying, Ask to Buy and Family Sharing
- You stay in control of purchases. All purchases go through Apple. If your teen's Apple Account is in your family group with Ask to Buy on, you'll get a request on your own device and can approve or decline it (Apple Support). Nothing is charged until you approve.
- Family Sharing isn't available for Nightsesh plans. Each plan covers one student. If you have two students, each needs their own plan.
- Cancel anytime on the iPhone or iPad that has the subscription: Settings › [name] › Subscriptions › Nightsesh. The plan stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
